XML sitemap: A sitemap lists all the pages you want Google to index and helps it discover them efficiently. Submit your sitemap through Google Search Console. Check it is up to date and does not include pages you want excluded from the index.

Noindex tags: A meta robots noindex tag tells Google not to index a specific page. These are sometimes set intentionally, but can be left on accidentally after website development work. Any important page with a noindex tag will not appear in search results.

Crawl errors: Google Search Console’s Pages report shows you exactly which pages Google has tried to crawl and failed, which pages are indexed, and which are excluded and why. Review this report regularly.

Page Speed and Core Web Vitals

Page speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor, and in 2026 it is measured through a set of specific metrics called Core Web Vitals. These three metrics measure the real-world experience of loading and using your pages.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): How quickly the largest visible element on the page loads. Google’s target is under 2.5 seconds. Pages loading in under 2 seconds show a 9% bounce rate. Those exceeding 5 seconds jump to 38%.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP): How quickly your page responds when a user interacts with it, such as clicking a button or filling in a form. Google’s target is under 200 milliseconds. INP replaced the older First Input Delay metric in March 2024.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): How much the page layout shifts unexpectedly as it loads. A high CLS score means elements are jumping around as the page renders, which is disorienting for users. Google’s target is under 0.1.

Google’s Rich Results Test: Check whether your schema markup is valid and which rich result types your pages qualify for.
